The outside story
Designed by Studio Saar with structural engineers Atelier One for Strand Aldwych, the pavilion combines a bamboo grid shell with bamboo police shields and woven rain shields known as knups. The festival describes a canopy that brings these objects into a new relationship with shelter and public gathering.
Our studio take
A material can carry the story before anyone reads a headline. For an installation brief, ask what the surface communicates up close, what the structure does from across the street, and where people can comfortably stop. Those are three different design jobs.
For a pop-up, try resolving the shelter, seating and information together. A striking object becomes more useful when the visitor can understand how to approach it and what to do next. This is our production reading of the project, not a claim that Chromatic participated.
